Estimate the mass of a paper order

Enter the actual sheet width and height in millimetres, the paper’s stated GSM and the number of sheets. Use parent-sheet dimensions for untrimmed stock or finished dimensions for trimmed pieces. Select Calculate to see one-sheet mass and the total paper mass.

The GSM calculation

GSM means grams per square metre. Sheet mass in grams = width in mm × height in mm ÷ 1,000,000 × GSM. Total kilograms = sheet grams × quantity ÷ 1,000. An A4 sheet at 80 GSM weighs about 4.9896 g. A 500-sheet ream is therefore about 2.4948 kg before its wrapper.

What this estimate excludes

Ink, coating added after manufacture, binding, lamination, packaging and moisture can change the final weight. If you are planning postage or courier delivery, weigh a finished sample and include packing materials. The result is paper mass, not a shipping charge.

GSM is not paper thickness

Two papers with the same GSM can have different thickness and stiffness. This calculator does not estimate caliper, stack height or convert a US basis-weight label. Those conversions require additional information about the paper grade and its reference sheet size.
