Calculate document size with bleed

Enter the finished trim width and height in millimetres. Enter the same bleed allowance for all four edges, then calculate. Use the resulting outer dimensions only if your software asks for the full document including bleed. Applications with a separate bleed setting usually keep the page at trim size.

Bleed formula and A4 example

Document width = trim width + 2 × bleed. Document height = trim height + 2 × bleed. An A4 trim size of 210 × 297 mm with 3 mm on each edge needs an outer bleed area of 216 × 303 mm. The example does not mean every printer requires 3 mm.

Bleed is different from a safe margin

Bleed extends backgrounds beyond the cut edge to reduce unwanted white slivers. A safe margin keeps important text and logos inside the trim. This calculator adds outer bleed only; it does not add crop marks, reserve a gripper edge or check whether your background actually extends far enough.

Before exporting your artwork

Ask your print shop for its trim size, bleed, safe margin and export format. Avoid double-adding bleed in both the page dimensions and export settings. Large banners and fabric prints can require a different allowance from cards and flyers.

Frequently asked questions

Does this add crop marks?

No. It calculates dimensions only. Enable marks in your design application if the printer requests them.

Can I use different bleed on each side?

This version assumes equal bleed on every edge. For unequal bleed, add left plus right to width and top plus bottom to height.

What happens with zero bleed?

The calculated document size equals the finished trim size.
