What counts as a word?
This counter treats sequences of letters or numbers as words. Urdu vowel marks stay with their letters. Common contractions such as “don’t” and hyphenated terms such as “well-known” count as one word. Punctuation and standalone emoji are not words. A number such as 2026 counts as one word.
For example, السلام علیکم پاکستان contains three space-separated words. “Hello پاکستان 2026” also counts as three. Urdu spacing conventions vary, so an examiner or word processor may use a different counting rule. Use their required method for a strict submission limit.
Characters, paragraphs and lines
On modern browsers, the character total counts visible grapheme clusters: a letter with a combining vowel mark or a joined family emoji is treated as one character. The total includes whitespace; “without spaces” excludes whitespace. Older browsers may fall back to Unicode code-point counting.
Blank lines separate paragraphs. A line means a line break in your text, not a visual wrap caused by the screen width. Resizing your phone or computer window therefore does not change the line count.
Useful for Pakistani writers and students
Check an Urdu essay, English assignment, Roman Urdu caption, or bilingual article before submitting it. The box follows your text direction automatically. There is no translation, spelling correction or grading: the tool measures the text you provide.
Frequently asked questions
Can it count Roman Urdu?
Yes. Roman Urdu uses Latin letters, which are supported alongside Urdu script and English.
Does it work with old InPage files?
Paste readable Unicode text. The tool does not open InPage files or convert legacy encodings; garbled text must be converted first.
Is my writing stored?
The counter does not use local storage or upload your text. Reloading the page can erase it, so keep important writing in your own document. The website’s general privacy policy still applies to normal page visits.
Why does another counter show a different number?
Tools differ in how they split punctuation, hyphenated words, numbers and Urdu text without spaces. This page explains its rules so you can interpret the total.
