Free Hash Generator: SHA-256, SHA-1 & SHA-512

KHIYALEE / FREE DEVELOPER TOOLS

hash generator: Create a hexadecimal digest from text using SHA-256, SHA-1 or SHA-512. The browser converts the text to UTF-8 bytes and calculates the selected digest. SHA-256 is the default. SHA-1 is included for legacy comparison, not for new security-sensitive uses.

This tool processes inputs in your browser. It does not send them to an external processing service or save them. Normal site visits remain subject to the privacy policy.

How to use the hash generator

  1. Paste the exact text, including any intentional spaces and line breaks.
  2. Choose SHA-256, SHA-1 or SHA-512.
  3. Generate the digest using a modern browser on HTTPS.
  4. Copy the result and compare the full hexadecimal string.

Worked example

The SHA-256 hash of the exact lowercase text “abc”, without quotes or a line break, is ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad.

Hash Generator: understand the result

The exact input matters

A trailing space, different letter case or final line break produces a different digest. This tool does not trim or normalise text automatically, so you can hash the bytes represented by the input. When comparing results between systems, agree on UTF-8 encoding and line endings before assuming that a difference means a damaged document.

Hashing is not encryption

A digest is not an encrypted copy that can be decoded back into the original message. It is commonly used for comparison and integrity workflows. A plain fast SHA digest is not an appropriate password-storage scheme; account systems need a purpose-built salted password-hashing method. This tool also does not generate HMAC authentication codes.

Algorithm and browser limits

SHA-256 outputs 64 hexadecimal characters, SHA-1 outputs 40 and SHA-512 outputs 128. The page requires the browser’s Web Crypto digest support on HTTPS. It accepts text, not a file upload, and the input is limited to keep memory use reasonable. Use SHA-1 only when matching a legacy format that specifically requires it.

Use the hash generator on mobile or desktop

The hash generator controls adapt to the available screen width. On a phone, fields stack vertically; on a wider screen they stay grouped together. Choose the mode first, read the input labels, and then generate the result. The Copy result button copies the output if your browser allows clipboard access. If permission is unavailable, the output is selected so that you can copy it manually.

Keep a copy of any important input in your own document before resetting or leaving the page. Reset restores the starting controls and clears the displayed output; it does not create an undo history. The tool does not retain previous results, compare them with a database or submit them to another application for you.

After copying, check the result in the destination where you intend to use it. Preserve meaningful units, labels and exact characters. A browser calculation or conversion can be correct while a separate form, document or production process expects a different input format. Use the example above to understand the operation before relying on your own result.

Hash Generator: frequently asked questions

Can I decrypt a hash?

No. This is a digest generator, not encryption or decryption.

Can it hash a downloaded file?

This version hashes text only, not file bytes.

Should I store passwords as plain SHA-256?

No. Password storage needs a suitable salted password-hashing scheme.
