image to Base64: Select a PNG, JPEG, GIF or WebP file and turn it into a Base64 data URL. The tool reads the selected file locally, previews the image and provides both the complete data URL and the Base64 payload. The maximum file size is 2 MB to keep mobile memory use modest.

How to use the image to Base64
- Choose a supported image file no larger than 2 MB.
- Select Convert image and wait for the local preview.
- Choose a complete data URL or the Base64 payload only.
- Copy the output into the destination that requires that format.
Worked example
A PNG data URL begins with data:image/png;base64, followed by the encoded bytes. The complete URL can be used in an HTML image src attribute; a field asking only for Base64 needs the payload after the comma.
Image to Base64 Converter: understand the result
A data URL includes a media-type prefix
The prefix tells the receiving application what kind of bytes follow. Base64 payload alone does not include that label. Choose the complete data URL for a browser image source and the payload-only option for an interface that supplies the media type separately. Always follow the destination application’s expected format rather than guessing from an example.
Encoding increases size
Base64 typically adds about one third to the byte length, plus a short data-URL prefix. It does not compress an image. Large embedded images can make HTML or CSS bulky and cannot be cached independently like a normal image URL. Use Base64 for a specific small embedding requirement rather than replacing every website image with encoded text.
Supported files and local processing
This version accepts PNG, JPEG, GIF and WebP based on the browser-provided media type and checks that the image can load. SVG is excluded. An animation remains encoded as the original file rather than being converted into a static screenshot. The tool does not resize, optimise, strip metadata or upload your selected image to a conversion service.
Use the image to Base64 on mobile or desktop
The image to Base64 controls adapt to the available screen width. On a phone, fields stack vertically; on a wider screen they stay grouped together. Choose the mode first, read the input labels, and then generate the result. The Copy result button copies the output if your browser allows clipboard access. If permission is unavailable, the output is selected so that you can copy it manually.
Keep a copy of any important input in your own document before resetting or leaving the page. Reset restores the starting controls and clears the displayed output; it does not create an undo history. The tool does not retain previous results, compare them with a database or submit them to another application for you.
After copying, check the result in the destination where you intend to use it. Preserve meaningful units, labels and exact characters. A browser calculation or conversion can be correct while a separate form, document or production process expects a different input format. Use the example above to understand the operation before relying on your own result.
Image to Base64 Converter: frequently asked questions
Does it compress my image?
No. The original bytes are encoded and the text is larger.
Can I convert SVG?
No. This version accepts PNG, JPEG, GIF and WebP only.
Why is the output very long?
Base64 represents file bytes as text, so even a small image produces a long string.
