BMI calculator: Calculate body mass index from height and weight using metric or imperial units. This adult calculator applies the standard CDC categories for people aged 20 and older. BMI is a screening measure and does not diagnose health, measure body fat directly, or provide a weight-loss plan.

How to use the BMI calculator
- Choose kilograms and centimetres, or pounds and total inches.
- Enter a recent weight and your height using the displayed units.
- Calculate the result and read the unrounded category alongside the one-decimal display.
- Use the explanation to discuss the result with a qualified clinician if needed.
Worked example
For 70 kilograms and 175 centimetres, height is 1.75 metres. BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = approximately 22.9. The standard adult screening category is healthy weight.
BMI Calculator: understand the result
The BMI formula and adult categories
The metric formula divides kilograms by height in metres squared. The calculator converts pounds and inches to the same metric calculation. Standard categories are underweight below 18.5, healthy weight from 18.5 to below 25, overweight from 25 to below 30, and obesity at 30 or above. The category uses the full calculated value rather than the rounded display.
Who should use a different assessment
Children and teenagers need age- and sex-specific BMI interpretation. This calculator is not intended for pregnancy. Muscle mass, age, body composition and ethnicity can affect interpretation; the standard categories are not an individual diagnosis for Pakistani or other South Asian readers. A clinician may use other measurements and locally appropriate guidance.
Measure the inputs carefully
Choose one unit system and keep both measurements in that system. Five feet eight inches means 68 total inches, not 5.8 inches. Enter 175 for centimetres rather than 1.75. Small measurement changes can move a value near a category boundary, so use a reasonable recent measurement rather than rounding height heavily.
Use the BMI calculator on mobile or desktop
The BMI calculator controls adapt to the available screen width. On a phone, fields stack vertically; on a wider screen they stay grouped together. Choose the mode first, read the input labels, and then generate the result. The Copy result button copies the output if your browser allows clipboard access. If permission is unavailable, the output is selected so that you can copy it manually.
Keep a copy of any important input in your own document before resetting or leaving the page. Reset restores the starting controls and clears the displayed output; it does not create an undo history. The tool does not retain previous results, compare them with a database or submit them to another application for you.
After copying, check the result in the destination where you intend to use it. Preserve meaningful units, labels and exact characters. A browser calculation or conversion can be correct while a separate form, document or production process expects a different input format. Use the example above to understand the operation before relying on your own result.
BMI Calculator: frequently asked questions
Does BMI measure body fat?
No. It is a height-to-weight screening measure and cannot distinguish muscle from fat.
Is this suitable for children?
No. Children and teenagers need BMI-for-age assessment rather than these adult cut-offs.
Does a healthy category prove good health?
No. Health assessment also considers history, behaviours, examination and other measurements.
