Roza Rakhne Ki Dua: Fasting Intention and Urdu Meaning

Roza rakhne ki dua and niyyah are different. Intention is the resolve to fast; no fixed Arabic sentence is required. The Hanafi fasting guide explains this distinction. The prayer below, Rabbana taqabbal minna, is a Quranic request for acceptance from Al-Baqarah 2:127, not a special sehri formula.

Roza Rakhne Ki Dua: Arabic Prayer for Acceptance

رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

Urdu meaning

اے ہمارے رب! ہم سے قبول فرما۔ بے شک تو ہی سب کچھ سننے والا، سب کچھ جاننے والا ہے۔

English meaning

Our Lord, accept this from us. You hear all and know all.

Transliteration

Rabbana taqabbal minna innaka Antas-Sami‘ul-‘Alim.

Reference: البقرۃ 2:127 — دعا کا حصہ. Translations are explanatory renderings of the meaning.

Is there a prescribed dua for starting a fast?

The sources below explain that intention belongs to the heart. A person who deliberately prepares to observe a fast has a purpose, even if they have not memorised a sentence. Sahih al-Bukhari 1 establishes the importance of intention in actions. It does not prescribe a special sehri formula.

What about Wa bisawmi ghadin nawaytu?

This familiar wording expresses an intention to fast tomorrow. It should not be advertised as an authenticated prophetic dua merely because it appears on Ramadan cards. The Hanafi fasting guide says a firm intention in the heart suffices and discusses verbal expression as an additional practice. Other scholars discourage verbalising intention, as explained in this discussion of fasting intention. Both distinguish intention from a mandatory spoken formula.

A Quranic prayer for acceptance

Rabbana taqabbal minna appears in Surah Al-Baqarah 2:127, in the account of Ibrahim and Ismail raising the foundations of the House. The Arabic here is the prayer portion of that verse. You can learn its request for acceptance without treating it as a special formula that begins a fast. Our image includes this distinction.

When should I intend to fast?

Resolve before Fajr that you will fast, and follow a reliable local timetable for the start of dawn. Detailed rulings on late intention differ by school and by the type of fast; a missed Ramadan fast is not necessarily treated like a voluntary fast. Ask a qualified scholar about your specific case instead of relying on a general poster.

Learning the meaning

Taqabbal minna asks Allah to accept from us. As-Sami‘ and Al-‘Alim express His complete hearing and knowledge. Read the meaning slowly and keep the source note visible when sharing the image. A dua for acceptance and a dua at iftar address different moments; neither should be confused with the intention itself.
